About
A site about the parts of music that still make sense once you turn them into arithmetic.
What it is
Three kinds of thing. Explanations you can hear, where pressing a button checks the claim for you. Measurements from public datasets, written up with the method and its limits alongside. And later on, evaluations: running the models that claim to transcribe or generate music against a fixed task and publishing the numbers.
What it is not
It isn't about anyone's playing, practice or taste. Music shows up here as structure and as data. Nothing personal appears, and that's a decision rather than an oversight.
How the numbers are made
Anything here presented as a measurement was computed rather than remembered. The piano corpus work runs on a self-hosted Iceberg lakehouse: MIDI parsed into Parquet, written as Iceberg tables by Spark, queried with Trino. The parser, the load step and the queries sit in the repository next to this site, so you can re-derive a figure instead of taking my word for it.
Where a method has a limit that changes how you should read a number, that limit goes next to the number. The clustering threshold on the chord measurements is the obvious example: it caps what the method can see, so it says so on the page.
